The premise of BTTS Betting is self-explanatory. It stands for ‘Both Teams To Score' so if you bet on both teams score and they do, your bet will come in regardless of which team wins the match.
That also applies if the game finishes as at least a 1-1 draw. If you bet on BTTS and only one team scores or both teams fail to score, then you lose.
It also does not matter how many goals have been scored in the match as long as both teams score at least one each.
The other way to win a BTTS bet is if you select ‘No' and both teams DO NOT score.
Basically, the bookmaker will give you TWO options. They will offer odds on Yes and No.
If you think both football teams are on fire and likely to find the back of the net, you choose Yes.
If, however, you think one or both teams could keep a clean sheet, then you choose No.
How Often Does BTTS Happen in The Premier League?
In the 2022/23 Premier League season, both teams scored in 181 out of 380 matches. This accounts for around 47.6% of the games.
Tottenham Hotspurs was involved in the highest number of games where both teams scored. Spurs had 26 such matches out of their 38 league games.
In the season before, the 2021/22 Premier League, both teams scored in 193 out of 380 matches, which is approximately 50.8% of the games.
Manchester United had the highest number of games where both teams scored, with 25 matches out of their 38 league games.
So it works out near enough to 50% of Premier League games end with both teams scoring.
What About The Championship?
There are four more teams in the Championship than the Premier League, and in total, 552 games are played over the course of a season.
In the 2022/23 season both teams scored in 240 out of 552 matches, which is nearly 43.5% of the games.
Bristol City led the way as the team involved with the most games with BTTS, with 28 matches out of their 46 league games.
The figure for the previous season, 2021/22, was slightly higher at 256 out of 552 matches, which is roughly 46.4% of the games and it was QPR with the highest number with 27 out of their 46 league games.
So, on balance, a betting person would look at these stats and wager that, more probably than not, a game in the Championship will not see BTTS, and bet NO.
European Leagues
Serie A
Interestingly, with each season, the number of times the game ended with both teams scoring has fallen across the league.
In the 2020/21 season, it happened in 202 out of 380 matches, which is approximately 53.2%.
This fell to approximately 51.3% of the games in the 2021/22 season and only happened in 195 out of 380 matches.
And by the 2022/23 season, the number had fallen again when both teams scored in only 172 out of 380 matches, around 45.3% of the games.
The European league with the highest percentage of games where both teams score often fluctuates from season to season.
However, historically, the Bundesliga (Germany) tends to have a high frequency of matches where both teams score. This is due to the league's generally open and attacking style of play.
Over recent seasons, the Bundesliga has often led in this metric compared to other top European leagues like the Premier League (England), Serie A (Italy), La Liga (Spain), and Ligue 1 (France).
Does Extra-time Count?
The short answer to that question is NO.
BTTS betting only includes the 90 minutes plus injury time, so you need to be wary when betting in knockout competitions like the UEFA Champions League, League Cup or FA Cup.
Goals scored in extra time or on deciding penalties after full-time will not be included in your bet.
Do Own Goals Count?
Yes. Own goals do count for the purposes of BTTS betting. It does not matter how each side scores, just that they do.
Other Types Of BTTS Betting
BTTS and Win:
This is where you decide if both teams will score as well as the outcome of the match itself.
There are six different variants of this. Whilst this is obviously harder to predict, it does usually provide better odds.

- BTTS Yes and away win
- BTTS Yes and draw
- BTTS No and home win
- BTTS No and away win
- BTTS No and draw
- BTTS in Both Halves
As an example, in the Premier League, if Manchester United are at home to Liverpool and you think that both teams will score, but Manchester United will ultimately win the game, then you would bet on BTTS Yes and home win.
If, however, you think the away team will get the better of them and maybe win 3-1, so both teams score and Liverpool win, then you would place a bet on BTTS Yes and away win.
BTTS No and draw is essentially betting on a 0-0 outcome because the two teams do not score, and it ends in a draw.
BTTS in Both Halves is the most difficult bet because it means that both teams have to find the back of the net in both halves.
For that, you need at least a 2-0 outcome or better. It can be worth a look after a high scoring first half when both teams might want to a bit more defensive.
